"Teaching Cross-cultural Counselling to trainee counsellors is a waste of time. Instead, we should focus on equipping them with the skills and competencies for being good counsellors. These have nothing to do with culture." DISCUSS the above opinion.
First of all let me explain about the counselor and counseling. Actually counselor is someone who gets a training and expert in counseling. Besides that, an accredited counsellor is the one who has license and academic requirement. Meanwhile counselling is a process of two way interaction between client and counsellor with the elements of confidential and respect to each other. Besides that, counselling is not an advice process but helping the client to understand their problems in solving their problem with the good action. So in the counseling process the counselors will face many things including the client’s problems, attitudes and also the cultural. The counselors alway get ready to accept anyone as their client even different cultural from the counselors. Within this we can see that, it is one of the condition or ethic as a counselor who accepts the client with unconditional positive regard. Within my explanation, absolutely I disagreed with the statement that teaching cross-cultural counseling to trainee counselors is waste of time and also should focus on equipping with the skills and competencies. In my opinion we cannot said like that because every person has their ability and for the counselors, trainee them with teaching cross-cultural is advantage for them where this learning they will apply during the counselling session soon. Maybe some of us might think that teaching cross-cultural waste of time because of the issues and concepts in cross-cultural counselling. For instance they might thing that, learning cross-cultural will take time and at the same they will make a research to many places and so on. Actually, we do not denied that cross-cultural counselling cannot be separated from the broader socio-political environment but the important is how counselling is rooted in and the reflects the dominant values, beliefs, and biases of the larger society. Before we go further, let me give some information what is the cross-cultural and why should counsellor must learn. The cross-cultural may refer to a comparative tendency in various fields of cultural analysis, any of various forms of interactivity between members of disparate cultural and the discourse concerning cultural interactivity. Actually in my discussion, we will look in the Malaysia context as an example. As Malaysian, we must proud to be here because our country also one of unique country in this world which have three major different races which are Malay, India and Chinese that live together in this country. Hence, within this, we cannot deny it can waste the time but actually it is very suitable to counselors to get the cross-cultural teaching and that’s why the counselor should training with it. Besides that, for instance I take the school counselor as example related in my discussion, by teaching cross-cultural it can generate an internal confrontation of attitudes, behaviours and values regarding race that students may have internalized over their lifetimes and that may be reflected in their racial identity. Furthermore, if the counsellor has their skills to understand their clients even differences cultural, it cannot be problem to handle it. Cross-cultural counselling effectiveness is most likely enhanced when the counsellor uses counselling modalities and defines goals consistent with the life experiences or cultural values of the client. Then, the good counsellor just not only learns the theory but also do the practical. Within this teaching cross-cultural actually have its own benefit where the skills that they learns are as competencies to be a good counsellor. Besides that, when the counsellors have a trainee in this teaching, when they have to face problematic students with the differences races and cultures, they will try to solve the problem without any biases , feel empathy and the very important is respect to that client because they knew and understand every races and cultural. In conclusion, in order to produce the good and understanding counselors, we cannot think that something important to them is wasting time because if we do not try we cannot know it such as in this issue which is teaching cross-cultural. So, everything that related to us, we must make research either it is good or not and do not left it without any reason. Last but not least, with this teaching will also create awareness to counselors and also cannot make the counselors become judgemental person.
