position paper 2 - Mariatulkhabtiyah bt Mohd Khamzah ( 0716106 )

'of course religion is important. But I am Malay first before I become a Muslim". Discuss

Malaysia is known as multicultural country that consists of more than three races such as Malay, Chinese, Indian and others. It is just like the salad bowl that we can differentiate each other even though we live in the same country. Race plays an important role in every person until some of them forgot about the role of religion. It is just like my assignment topic in position 2 which says: “of course religion is important. But I am a Malay first before I become a Muslim.” There is a lot of information that I want to say regarding this topic.
In my personal opinion, I do agree that race is important in every person. The role of race is to shows the identity of the person. Without race, the person does not know the history or the flow of their family. It is absolutely true that all of us are Malay first before becoming a Muslim. It is because; we become Malay since we are in the mother’s womb. Our parents, ancestors and the past generation are Malay so we are part of them. The blood that enters our veins, the skin colour, the eye colour and so on shows that we belong to the particular race ( malay ). Besides, race is important to determine the heritance or to review the history of family.
In the other hand, religion is the most important thing in human life rather than race. A man cannot be a civilized man if he does not have belief and religion to guide him in this world. It is ‘fitrah’ that we need religion to enlighten our life to the better one. Besides, each person in this world is vicegerent that develops the earth. Being Malay, Chinese, Indian or whatsoever is meaningless if they do not have religion. Normally, Malay people are associated with Islam. It cannot be separated. ‘Islam is the way of life’, from this quotation I can say that being a Muslim is very lucky. Islam teaches their follower to implement Islamic teaching in everything they do. A man is not a complete person if he does not fulfill the requirement of physical and spiritual needs in them. That is why our education system include it in National Educational Philosophy ( Falsafah Pendidikan Negara) which emphasize four aspects which are physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual. It does not mention races at all. These four elements are important to mould a dynamic person.
Then, the people who do not fulfill the spiritual aspect in their life are not a complete person. Even though they are successful businessman, lawyer or other professional profession, they only manage to be a good citizen and not a complete person ( insan kamil ). A complete person is the one who fulfill the needs of themselves like spiritual, physical, emotion and intellectual. They have balance in religion and other aspects.
As a conclusion, religion plays a big role in determine the successful of man rather than race. Thus, government should emphasize and propagate the National Educational Philosophy not only for teachers but also in every person in Malaysia. So they will become ‘insan kamil’ and individual balance.
