POSITION PAPER NO.1

Teaching Cross-cultural Counseling to trainee counselors is a waste of time. Instead, we should focus on equipping them with the skills and competencies for being good counselor. These have nothing to do with culture. Discuss the above opinion.

From the topic given, I absolutely disagree that it is wasting to teach Cross-cultural Counseling to the trainee. No matter, they are still trainee or have become professional counselors, as long as they hold the title of counselor, they should learn Cross-cultural Counseling.

Why I’m saying that because if this Cross-cultural Counseling had been teached from the beginning or from they are trained counselor, they will understand better their clients and become an expertist in this counseling. Although we are coming from the same ethnics and races, it still have differences in a way of our life. For example, I am Malay and my friend also Malay but she is from Sarawak. When both of us sit down together and discuss about our culture in our society, it is quite different. It is because we are not coming from the same root. Furthermore, is we are facing the clients from ohers ethics such as Chinese, Indian, Kadazan and so on, it will be more differences. Besides, it is not a waste when learn this Conseling because we are gaining the knowledge and it is also a requirement for counselor to become knowledgeable person.

Second reason why I disagree with the topic is in my opinion with learning Cross-cultural Counseling, we are adding our skills in counseling. It is not enough for us or counselor especially trainee counselor to learn only the skills and competencies for being good counselor. If you ask ourselves that it is enough to be a good counselor only? What will be your answer? For me, of course it is not enough just being a good counselor because I also want to be an understanding, marvellous and trustworthy counselor. In this case, of course with learning Cross-cultural Counseling, we can obtain our goals.

On the other hand, some people said that trainee counselor should not be teaching with this Cross-cultural Counseling because they can learn from time to time when we having our own clients. The trainee should master the others skills for learn this Cross-cultural Counseling. Yes, it is right for trainee to master the others skills but if we add the Cross-cultural Counseling it will be more meaningful for the trainee counselors. Besides, with we are clients from different ethics with counselor, which counselor will we get the services? Counselor A who have skills and competencies for being good counselor or the counselor B who also have those skills and added with Cross-cultural Counseling? For me, I will choose counselor B because I know I can trust him more than counselor A and he must be more understanding with my cultural.

In conclusion, teaching Cross-cultural Counseling to trainee counselors would be a waste of time because it has many advantages if we learn it from the beginning as a counselor. Because of that, this Cross-cultural Counseling will be teach not only to the trainee but also the professional counselors who have not learning it.
