Counselor are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concept... Discuss..

By : Raja Nur Ashraf Bt. Raja Ariff

Rakyat didahulukan, prestasi diutamakan. Is the word that we always hear. But, are we really understand the above frasa? I am not going to discuss about that, but here I just want to share my opinion about my next position paper.

Counsellors are the key to the success of one Malaysia concept. From my own understanding about 1 Malaysia concept is that, our government want all of us as the citizen of Malaysia live in harmonies, peace and calm in our beloved country. As we know, Malaysia consists of many race and religion. Can the different in the aspect that I state above, make us comfortable and live in harmonies? Those things are obvious being discuss in one Malaysia concept.

In my opinion, I am totally agreed that counsellor is the key to make sure that one Malaysia concept is successful. Counsellor should able to be a good informer and good agent to convey and give information about anything. Counsellor should always prepare to everything and must have a wider knowledge. Counsellor also should be ‘bridge’ between government and society. If there is question or something that people did not understand ,not clear or not satisfied they may ask counsellor to make a clarify or explanation of it. That why being a counselor, you have to being knowledgeable.

Counsellor should spread the information of one Malaysia concept to the student, school, admin and also the comity and the neighbour. Counsellor should explain and elaborate the concept of one Malaysia. Counsellor should tell them, why one Malaysia concept have being introduce and the important to understand and of practical the concept of one Malaysia.

This concept of one Malaysia is also help counsellor to deal with client in multicultural issue. If all of us really understand about the concept of unite and being together . If all of us unite as one team without take the different as the barrier, the racial issue can be completed eliminate. We should bear in our mind that the most important thing is all of us should comfortable and proud of our own religion and race but in the same time we must respect the differences of the other racial. If we practice those thing, than we can be good citizen and of course the concept of one Malaysia is succsess.

“Counselors are the key to the success at the 1 Malaysia Concepts”

The statements about the counselors are the key to the success at the 1 Malaysia concepts is an interesting topic we can discuss which is I agree with that because according to our culture and community here, we live with variety of races. For instance, Malay, Indian, and Chinese which are the major races in Malaysia even though we have several more ethnics that exist in this country. Since now, we live in peace and harmony and this year we have already celebrate our independence day for 52 years. This shows us along 52 years we live together without any crisis. So related to the counselors, as counselors, they have been exposed about multicultural counseling and how to handle it if the students had problems. So about this concept, I think, this is a not big problem in promoting this to people especially schools students, higher education students and others on accepting this concept.

For our information, “Satu Malaysia, Rakyat Didahulukan, Pencapaian Diutamakan” concept was introduced by our Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Mohd. Najib bin Tun Abd. Razak since he was take that post on 3 April 2009. In this concept has promoted the Malaysian to be more patriotism and must be obeying to the country rules. Besides that, it also promos all people to get unite among each other and Malaysian people must assume that Malaysia is our own and all people in this country are Malaysian.

So as Malaysian counselors, we must alert about it and try to think how this concept can be acceptance by the students. Actually, the counselor also learnt about multicultural counseling, so it is a time to apply it in order to ensure the students understand this concept. For instance the counselors can collaborate with school which has different cultural to have some program that can unite these multicultural students for example “sports day”, “canteen open day”, and others. Actually it is an opportunity to them to cooperation to each other in running theses program and indirectly can make a close relationship among the students where at the same time it is including in this 1 Malaysia concept vision.

Besides that, respect the different cultural is very relevant and important, especially in this multicultural country. In discipline knowledge, respected to another cultural is important as example in multicultural counseling is very particular about respecting and understanding in different element and cultural. Besides that, as counselor must understand the uniqueness in client cultural. Failing to understand can make the counseling not functioning well and the counselor also cannot feel empathy in client itself. For instance, during the counseling session, the counselor must accept any client even different races such as Chinese or Indian student with unconditioning positive regard and try to understand them in solving such problems besides using the appropriate skills. Actually when we understand them, it makes them comfortable with us and discrimination between different races cannot be happen.
Last but not least, everyone must play their role in order to realize this 1 Malaysia concept especially counselor who has a big influence to students in school. Furthermore, in make a realization on 1 Malaysia, it is important for every community as example in education context, the students have to respect the identity and uniqueness without sacrifice their special tradition and cultural.

POSITION PAPER 5 - Siti Fatimah Nor Bt Saad Isman (0729206)

Our beloved Prime Minister had introduced the 1 Malaysia concepts as to make the Malaysian become tougher in facing the challenges in the globalization, including in the field of social, economy and also politic. This concept is suitable with the Malaysia that consists of multi races and cultures. The purpose of this concept is to strengthen the relationship and cooperation between citizens which consist of multi races to become a prior weapon to face any challenges that can disturb the relationship between races. According to our Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, the 1 Malaysia concepts means, “We stand, we think and act as Malaysian. One people. And we take the actions based on the needs of all the ethnic groups in our country.” This statement means that all the citizens and the leader must play their own roles to accomplish 1 Malaysia concepts. This includes the counselors which also must play their role to make the 1 Malaysian concepts success.

As the counselors, their must do their best in their job according what is need in making the 1 Malaysia concepts accomplish. The duty to make all the races become unite can be done from the school stage which the counselor should gather all the races together in every program that been held. By doing this, they can learn to respect and have the trustworthy towards each others. The counselors must put this kind of value in every student which they will adopt and practice until they grown up. By using the counselor’s knowledge and skills, there is possibility to make all the races become unite and the concept of 1 Malaysia become successful. I strongly agree and believe that counselors are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concepts because counselors have specific skills in dealing with people and also they have the ability to influence other. The counselors may use their power together with the other party to involve in facing the challenges and strengthen the relationship between races according to 1 Malaysia concepts.

The specific skills that counselors have are very useful in handling people’s feeling and emotion which it can change one’s perception or thinking. Counselors may use their skills to make people realize the important of the concepts by themselves. Counselors can handle a program that is suitable for all races and it can give benefit to all that involve. The program should make the participants have the self-awareness in themselves which they can give full cooperation with each other without having any barriers between races and cultures. The other party also such as teacher, parents and society should involve together in helping the counselors to make 1 Malaysia concepts become true.

The ability that counselor have is not just to assist and guide the people which have a problem only but they also can influence people to have the different view and perception. In every counseling session, counselors can give some information about the concepts and let the client absorb the information and spread to other. The counselor can easily convince the client because the counselors already build the good rapport with the client. Counselors are already being trained with the skill in dealing with multicultural people. So, it is easy for the counselors to face the client which comes from different races, culture and background. This might be a good beginning for counselors in contribute to the 1 Malaysia concepts.

In conclusion, it is believe that counselor is one of the key to make the 1 Malaysia concepts successful and meet the objectives. It can be done if all the people play their roles and not only just sit down and doing nothing. They must be together as people that have same feeling and thinking who stand and act as Malaysian. All people are the same where they share together their belief and thinking. As for counselors, they must take the new steps and try to look for further ways in making the 1 Malaysia concepts successful.

POSITION PAPER 5,Siti Farhana Elias (0719618)

“Counselors are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concept”

1 Malaysia concept, a new initiative by our Prime Minister YAB Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak is designed to the unity of such a multicultural country. There is certainly a need to have more responsibility and accountability counselors to the success this concept. Here I could say that counselors become important social agents for the healthy development of the nation’s unity. Counselors can be the key of success for the living in a multi- racial as well as multi- religious society. Counselor roles are really crucial in dealing with the social and cultural environment of the society.
The others reason counselors are the key of the 1 Malaysia concept because they are professionally competent in relevant psychological skills, knowledge, psychosocial and mental health which is not have in the other person. They have the ability and capability in assisting the client in different culture towards modernity, pluralism, gender equality, universal human right and so on. They have the appropriate methods to the need of society because they advocates in focusing on the corrective or orientation program comprising of awareness campaigns, seminar and workshop to provide information and guidance activities.
However, some people say that counselors are not the key to success of 1 Malaysia concept. People are no need to seek for counselors’ helping. They are not believe in counselors because the counselors themselves really incompetent from adequate training as professional helping person. They do not know everything and they do not have the knowledge. So, how can they able to deal with people? How can they be genuine concern, empathy, aware and conscious to the people needs?
In my opinion, I agree that counselors are the key to the success of 1 Malaysia concept because of their intellectual background, knowledge, ethical standards, and skill that they are possessed. Thus, they are capable to demonstrate positive relations by showing respect for the worth and dignity of the society. Meaning that, they have the capability to bring the unity among the societies.

Counselors Are the Key to the Success of 1Malaysia Concept.

One Malaysia is a concept that our prime minister stand for. Datuk seri Najib Tun Razak spoke out loud about his hope to unite al nation in one roof. As we all know Malaysia is one of the multicultural country and to be more unite, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak hope that “One Malaysia” concept will come true and success. All counselors have the key to unite other? Why? This is because they learned how to unite them. They learned about other culture, value and norm. They have to adapt with other races and most important thing is it is their job, this is their field. All counselors had been though about multiculturalism, taught about awareness, sensitivity, and so on. Awareness is one of the key elements that the counselor should master before guiding other people. Counselor must have awareness in term of the influences of other culture, heritage on client experiences, attitudes, values, and behaviours. Counselors have specific comprehensive knowledge of the culture affects ones definition of normality and the process of the counseling. Cultural sensitivity is not limited to one group but applies to all cultures.

Now, we focus how counselors to instill “One Malaysia” concept to all generation. First, when we want to teach something new or present new syllabus, whose are the perfect target to promote it? Of course children and teenagers because they the one who observe and absorb all new information well. Counselors as the role model, do something that shows that we care about other races. Counselors always talk good about other races and being moderate to them especially to teachers and staffs at school. Ask them about their festive and invite them to join events at schools even thought the even sometimes for religion purpose. Another example, in the counseling session, if the Indian student felt down when other keep insulted him in front of people, we as the counselors must consult him and the other student that bullying him. Every problem in the world must have solutions; we have to be wise to search for a good solution.

Moreover, beside awareness, counselors should have high sensitivity about other culture values, norms, attitude, and behavior and so on. When we as a Malay think that shaking hand with opposite sex is wrong, but other culture maybe does not care about it, it not against their values. Must bear in our mind do not put them in our values but must understand and respect their values and ours too. For example, in Chinese culture, if one of their relative die, there will be a car that brings the body to the grave yard, before their reach the graveyard, they will play loud music along the way to the grave, as Malay and a Muslim, how we act? Hence, as counselor, we should instill sensitivity among the student so that, the student will know to respect other culture. We can make a program such as every Monday there will be a story telling from very races of student in that school. The student will tell others about what is the interest event that happened in their own life or legendary story in their culture such as about indian wedding, Hang Tuah and so on.

In conclusion, counselor is the key role to make sure that One Malaysia because they can instill the “One Malaysia” values to all society. They can implement certain program and group counseling to make sure that the students know what is One Malaysia is all about.

Counselors Are the Key to the Success of 1Malaysia Concept.

1Malaysia? What is it? Is it all races being together? Eat together? Live together? Learning together? Or else? 1Malaysia is the slogan that being introduced by Datuk Seri Najib Razak to define his administration. 1Malaysia’s goal is to preserve and enhance this unity in diversity which has always been our strength and remains our best hope for the future. There are eight values in 1Malaysia are Perseverance, Culture of Excellence, Acceptance, Loyalty, Education, Humility, Integrity and Meritocracy. To think about it, how we want to fulfill all the values and elements in 1Malaysia? By judging today’s world, we have to work hard for it and believe that all parties have to get along. In order to succeed the 1Malaysia concepts, I believe that counselors are the one of the key because they always deal with all parties, they understand more about diversity and they are good agent to consult the others.
As we all know, counselors always face with many clients who are from various culture, races and religion. In counseling session or when counselors dealing with their clients, they also can put elements or values of the 1Malaysia concept in their discussion and stated why it is important. In addition, counselors can talk anything as with their clients as long as they are not violating their ethics and principles. So, counselors are the best person to be the key of the success of 1Malaysia concept.
Moreover, counselors are the only professional that has principles consenting of unconditional positive regard, genuineness and empathy. Just because of these principles, counselors understand more on diversity and always accept the diversity. In fact, counselors also learn how to cope with diversity and always give full commitment in gaining trust from the others. As counselors work on the clients’ problem, they also can infuse some 1Malaysia values to the clients. Thus, it is one of the methods that can grant the success of the 1Malaysia concept.
On the other hand, some people may say that government is the right person to be the key of the succeed 1Malaysia concepts. Just because, government is the party that has strong power in consulting other people, so they are the only one who can grant the success. However, it is strongly agreed that counselors are the right person in achieving the success of 1Malaysia concept because they are the good agent to consult people. Although government has power in society, they are still a big gap in relationship between government and society. Some parties still arguing the credibility of the government and cannot follow all the government’s rules and suggestions because of differences belief in them. But counselors can get along with the differences belief in others and can convince the others to accept 1Malaysia concept with being prejudice or face any injustice issues. Therefore, counselors are the key to the success of 1Malaysia concepts.
In conclusion, counselors can take the responsibility as the key to the success of 1Malaysia concepts as they are always deal with all parties, they understand more about diversity and they are good agent to consult the others. In order to fulfill it, all parties have to work together without concern about the diversity among each other and give their best to realize this concept as all religion ask their follower to be kind to all human life.

POSITION PAPER 5 by Nurul Farhana Sulong (0724700)

Counselors are the key to the success of the 1Malaysia concept.

Biodiversity of culture, race, ethnic and belief in Malaysia has creating the 1Malaysia concept by Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd.Najib Tun Abdul Razak as a way to integrate Malaysians. What is 1Malaysia concept actually? As defined by Prime Minister, “we stand, we think and we act as Malaysian. One people. We take all actions based on ethnics and races wants and needs in our country”. From this quote, we may define that people from variety of races and beliefs need to think for the others, not only think for their own cultures and ethnics. In addition, the leader also needs to fulfill people’s rights regardless of their races and ethnics in Malaysia in order to achieve 1Malaysia concept. So, here I strongly agree that counselors are the key to the success of the 1Malaysia concept because counselors close to the society and leaders as well as counselors know the suitable approach in order to implement the 1Malaysia concept.

Firstly, counselors are the key to the success of the 1Malaysia concept since they are close to the society and leaders. From this aspect, I could say that the counselors are the key indicator because they may be the bridge between the society and the leaders in terms of delivering the thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Why I said so? It is the counselors’ job scope in shaping the understanding for both parties in order to have harmonious administration for the country. Hence, in small scope such as in schools, counselors should play their roles to build mutual understanding among the schools society which is among students, teachers, and administrations. In fact, the relationship between the teachers and parents as well especially for the parents those come from different ethnics, races, and beliefs in coping with each others.

Secondly, it is because the counselors know the suitable approach to implement the 1Malaysia concept properly especially for those who are major in multicultural counseling. They should apply all the knowledge they have learned to provide successfulness in 1Malaysia concept. The acceptance of the others in one community should be primary goal in developing 1Malaysia concept. Without that entire acceptance, 1Malaysia concept will be collapsed since they are no cooperation among the society, and leaders. As a result, Malaysia will be developed in chaos and it will give troubles to all. Here, it clearly can be seen that counselors’ roles is needed in approaching the concept. Counselors can imply a program that combine all the elements and principles which are primary sources for developing 1Malaysia concept especially in schools. Such programs should be developed from the bottom, so it will be the compulsory elements for all students and teachers within themselves like Malay proverb, “melentur buluh biarlah dari rebungnya”.

Some may say that counselors are no need in 1Malaysia concept since it is government policy. They believe that the leaders themselves should play their roles and jobs in order to achieve what they expect. In fact, that is their responsibility in building and shaping the country as the best as they can. However, it is believed that all the parties should play the roles as the community in order to build one successful nation. Educators, elderly, leaders, youngsters, counselors, and etc should cooperate with each other in order to develop the future generation that is meeting to the 1Malaysia concept. Early education regarding on this matter should be stressed and focused especially for the adolescents’ students since they are leaders-to-be.

In conclusion, I could say that counselors are the key to the success of the 1Malaysia concept but with the helps of the others. Everybody’s roles especially in multiracial country like Malaysia are needed in order to build integration among the people. Therefore, all Malaysians have to apply the 1Malaysia concept which is togetherness and sense of belonging as a way to achieve the principles of it. In fact, from Islamic point of view also encourage that all people should integrate and know each other regardless of their races, ethnics, and beliefs as long as they do the right things and respect the others.

“Counselors are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concepts”
By : Nor Hanani Binti Ahmad Tajudin (0727412)

1 Malaysia concept, actually what exactly this concept tries to propose to us, try to teach us to do and what we as the Malaysian citizen need to give our cooperation in contributing to the thrive of this concept. Actually as we know, this is a new concept proposed by our current Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak as he hold the prime post. Every Prime Minister has their own manifestation or strategy in order to govern this country and at the same time tackle the heart of the citizens as a whole to support the government. Before this, Malaysians does not exposed to this concept yet, but after Dato’ Seri Najib took the post, he invested this 1 Malaysia concept. The Prime Minister also states, on record, that the 1 Malaysia concept is the guideline on how to achieve “bangsa Malaysia”, which translates into English as a “Malaysian race”. Our Prime Minister also states that the primary aspect of the 1 Malaysia concept has three core elements. These are including mutual acceptance amongst the races and peoples of Malaysia, nationalism based on principles of the Federal Constitution and the Rukunegara and the third is social justice. In a country where racial tension still simmers underneath the surface, he has come up with an idea designed to address them.

For me, 1 Malaysia concept carries the meaning of unity among the whole Malaysians citizens including all the races, ethnicities, religions, beliefs, cultures, and customs and so on. This concept tries to unite us regardless if we are Malays, Chinese, Indians, Sikhs, Siamese, Islam, Buddha, Hindus, Christians, Orang Asli, Kadazan or others to live happily, harmony and togetherness under the same ruler and on the same ground ‘tanah’, known as Malaysia. This concept has been a hot issues that every Malaysians talking about nowadays. Not just people in urban areas but the villagers also talk a lot about this. But the point is, is every one of us, get exactly what is 1 Malaysia try to present?

As based on the topic given, counselors are the sources of this 1 Malaysia concept. For me, how come we can be sources if don’t know what is the 1 Malaysia all about. Who involves in this concept, what are the objectives, and so on? We have to alert with all the latest updated happening in our surroundings. As we aware that every citizen is involved, we have to get to know the differences and the similarities among all of us. After all, as counselors, we are taking courses or subjects related to this issue. That is why we can be the sources for this concept. Public can find us and refer to us regarding this issue as we have been taught and trained officially about the cross-cultural, multicultural counseling that we can handle and dealing with sort of thing. We understand Malaysians as various races and beliefs well, compared to those who are not well trained and have the skills in this field. People can just talk and gives personal opinion and response regarding this issue but not as full of comprehension as us as counselors. We talk with full of information because we did the research about others regardless their races, religions and ethnicities.

But of course, we have to properly use our advantages as counselors that we know the differences among races and religions well compares to others. We cannot take our advantages to condemn others differences and to stereotyping them or in another words, to judging them. If we ourselves did these kinds of negatives things, how can we be the sources of 1 Malaysia concept that need us to unite all of our citizens together in this country? We have to equally entertain others regardless their religions and races or their differences. We have to see the differences as the unique appearances represent by a race. That makes the Malaysia as a beautiful and harmony country to live in.

Thank you………………..(‘v’)

Position paper 5 : ‘ Counselors are the key success of the 1Malaysia concept.’

Based on the topic given, it is quite challenging if someone do not know about the concept. As for me, I do not know much about this concept but I will try my best to explain it. Hence, I do discuss with my friends regarding this 1Malaysia concept. This concept was proposed by our Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak when he began his job as prime minister in 2009 . Actually this concept is already existed but he just turn and change it into a new term; 1Malaysia.

In my opinion, the concept of 1Malaysia is to create unity among the three big races in Malaysia which are Malay, Chinese and Indian. Malaysia as a multicultural country should be united to develop the peace and harmony country. There are many agents that can contribute to the unity of Malaysian people. One of them is the counselors. As we know that counselor is the one that give service and help regarding people problems. Some counselors were placed at school while some counselors prefer to own and open their own agency or company. We can see their roles in uniting people.

Mostly in every program or concept, there must be pro and con. Firstly, I will explain about the pro. In my point of view, counselors are the one that can bring success to the 1Malaysia concept. It is because, as counselors that work at school, they are dealing with secondary and primary students that will rule Malaysia in the future. So, they can create the unity at school by organizing program that represents the culture of every race. For example, counselor can make a new program call ‘language section’. In language section, students are required to learn other races language in order to reduce the barrier among them. Thus, this activity can create a new climate to school and bring the spirit of togetherness among them. Counselors should be alert of this thing.

Secondly, counselor should make students that comes from different races know about their friends culture and do and don’s. If they are aware of this thing, some cases like school violence will not happen. Besides, counselors should not be bias in giving treatment to students. They must instill the unconditional positive regard in themselves so they will focus in their work.
Then, in the other hand I somehow doubted about the credibility of counselors. Are they capable dealing people with different races? It is achieveable for counselor to create unity at Malaysia? I am not confident that counselors are the key success to the 1Malaysia concept. It is very easy to said but very heavy to do. We are dealing with people that have many perceptions about each other culture, so the job of counselors to change the mindset is not easy. It is true that we can try to nurture and instill the spirit of unity at school but they are more listening to their parents and society. So, it might not be worked.

Secondly, some people do not believe with counselors’ credibility and attitude. They thought that being a counselor is only specific to give advice and solution. Thus, some people might being haunted by bad news about counselors that spoil the professions. So, counselors cannot carry out the task to bring success to the 1Malaysia concept.

As a conclusion, I agree that counselors can bring success to the 1Malaysia concept if they are confident and can change people mindset towards unity.

“Counselors are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concepts”
By: Nor Aslinawati Binti Nawawi (0726078)

With the time changing, we are now being lead by the fifth Prime Minister who has generate and come out with new idea and theme. Based on the previous leadership, he has promoted 1 Malaysia concept in order to make all Malaysian people become one. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that the 1 Malaysia concept’s ultimate objective is to achieve national unity among its people. He said "In other words, 1 Malaysia is a concept to foster unity in Malaysians of all races based on several important values which should become the practice of every Malaysian. 1 Malaysia is a formula which serves as a prerequisite to ensure realization of the country's aspiration to achieve developed nation status by 2020 if it is assimilated in the people and practiced by society. Here, we can see that our new Prime Minister is truly deeply in making our people be more responsibility and caring towards each other. So, as a counselor can we be the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concept? How come counseling or counselor be the key to this concept?

Although counseling is relatively new as a profession, but counseling services have been provided for many centuries. Counseling in various forms exists in all human societies around the globe, and the ways it is delivered vary broadly in different cultures and communities. In our life today, the needs of counselors are highly request. It is because that people had started realized that counselors are not for those who have mental illness or disorder, but counselor may play important role in their personal and life development. Counselors are the people who are professional and expert. They are not only listening to the problems but they also can assist clients in exploring their main problems and thinking. Counselor will help client knowing themselves deeply so that they will have right direction in their life. In my opinion, to make this concept be implemented and establish very well, we as a counselor can be the medium in promoting this concept. Counselors are being placed every where in this country especially nowadays, in each school, it is compulsory for them to provide at least a counselor for a school. As we know, in school there are students, teachers, support staff, parents and also the community. I am sure that school can be the first stage for the counselor to spread this new concept to be implemented. With the help by all parties, counselor can create and generate new programs that will unite all of the community in that school. Using all the opportunity given by the community and with the high level of trust toward the counselor, I am believed that counselor can be the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concepts.

As relate to this 1 Malaysia concept, we know, it will never happen if there is no cooperation between three main races in our country. All of them which are Indian, Chinese and Malay must play their own role in making this concept become true. But, with those misunderstanding between them lately, it will be difficult and hard to do it. As an alternative, counselor can play their roles as they had clear picture in multicultural concept. To be a counselor, there is one subject requirement entitle “Cross-Cultural” where they have to learn as a preparation for them in facing multicultural life when they become as a counselor. Besides, counselors are the key to the success of 1 Malaysia concept because they have power where they can change people perception and the way they are think. They have the ability which people will never think about it. They can create good relationship with other by having good communication between counselors and other. Using all the counseling skills, counselor may instill self awareness in each of their client the important of 1 Malaysia concepts and make them understand how important that concept to themselves, races, religions as well to the country itself. With that knowledge, counselors can help government to promote 1 Malaysia concept which can be accepted by all races using the right and suitable methods and ways.

On the other hand, some people may claim that without the counselors this 1 Malaysian concept will still go on. For them, this is our new mission and by hook or by crooked we must proceed even thought without the help of counselors. Government and other parties like printing media, electronic media and other will play their roles to accomplish this concept. They do not event need the counselors. However, those parties will only giving people the basic information only. And most important thing is that not all people will give full commitment on that. It is difficult to make people understand it if only promote it by paper based only. Counselors are not only dealing with the clients but also with the person who are close with the client and also the community around the clients. With this advantages, counselors may explain to them what is 1 Malaysia exactly all about. Begin with the individual then to the family and move to the society as well as to the community. Step by step will be taking in order to promote this concept. It is hope that all the citizens will accept it very well and not too drastic that will bring negetives effect for the country.

As a conclusion, I am strongly believe that counselors are the key to the success of 1 Malaysia concept because they are the one who are knowing people very well and by using their expertise, they can make people realize the important of the concept toward themselves, family, races, religions, society, community as well as to the country.

POSITION PAPER 5.

CROSS-CULTURAL COUNSELING (EDG 4008)
SUZIELAWATI BT OMAR @ ABDUL AZIZ (0816548)

“Counselors are the key to the success of the 1Malaysia concept”. Discuss.
The 1Malaysia concept that have already launched by our current Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak, which the vital aim of the concept is to facilitate the aspiration to forge unity among Malaysians of diverse ethnic origin, culture and religion. Since Malaysian consists of three major races, which is Malay, Chinese and Indian, so that the element needed to be created to enhance unity, as well as to ensure the concept of 1Malaysia is successful, was the respect and trust among the groups of different ethnic origin.
Then, according to the last topic of position paper above, I strongly disagree to say that counselors are the key to the success of the 1Malaysia concept. This is because I believed that there are another parties, especially parents and society itself to become the key for the success of the 1Malaysia concept. What can I say here is everyone believed that parents become the primary source of educating children at home since they in early age. So that, parents should instill their children with the spirit of unity, no discrimination and no doubt between all races in Malaysia, as well as they can mix and befriend with all community, without any discrimination from which races they are. On the other hand, the government also becomes one of the key to ensure the concept of 1Malaysia to be success. This is because the government becomes a back bone for a country in order to ensure the sense of unity, toleration, and harmony among the citizens which come from diverse races. Besides that, in order to make 1Malaysia to become reality, government should ensure that all races are given fair consideration and rights of theirs and not only one particular race to feel as though the government is isolating or sidelining them.
Furthermore, some people may assume that counselors also as a key to the success of the 1Malaysia concept. It is can’t be denied because counselor also may instill the spirit of unity among the students in school but how far it could be? Perhaps, a counselor can arrange a program which involves all the students from various races, but before that, counselor have to investigate first what does and does not in every race in order to avoid misunderstanding between all races. A counselor also has to alert about the sensitive issues that exist in every race during the program, otherwise it can lead to chaos among the community.
In the nut shell, my final assumption of the topic is I strongly disagree that counselors are the key to the success of 1Malaysia concept. Instead, all the parties such as parents, government and the societies itself are the key to ensure the success of 1Malaysia concept. In addition, all the races have to be aware that we have to respect each other, because it is the main key of unity among all. As what we can see now, Malaysia has already proved that different races can live together in harmony. Now, let Malaysia prove that the success of one race does not mean the defeat of the others, but is in fact the best way to achieve success for the whole country, InsyaAllah.

“POSITION PAPER 5”
“Counselors are the key to the Success of 1 Malaysia Concept”.

1 Malaysia concept has been introduced by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when he was announced as new Malaysia fifth prime minister on 3rd April 2009. That 1 Malaysia, a slogan meant to promote unity and mutual respect as well as trust among the different ethnic communities in Malaysia. According to him, 1 Malaysia concept to all Malaysians as he hoped it would turn the nation into a highly developed one in terms of race relations. Najib added that if Malaysians could truly understand the concept of 1 Malaysia, they could embrace their differences and regard it as unique instead of a source for problems.
It is argued that counselors are the key to the success of 1Malaysia concept. Perhaps it is true that they can be the key to the successful 1 Malaysia concept because they have learned how to communicate and to counsel the clients from diverse and various cultural backgrounds as well as they also have multicultural competency skills. So, they can apply all such skills in schools which are having multicultural students such as Malays, Chinese, Indian, Orang Asli and so on. Thus, the counselors may implement some programs that can involve by different culture students in order to adapt them with 1 Malaysia concept for example Multicultural Awareness Campaign, Multicultural Students Week, Culture Day and many more. In addition, it is also to ensure that they are gaining knowledge about multicultural school environment and outside communities so that they can understand the worldview of one’s own culturally different without negative judgments.
Besides that, counselors can be considered as the key to the success of 1Malaysia concept because they can play their role in developing and building good rapport among multicultural students. To illustrate, in counseling sessions counselors cannot be biased by choosing clients from the same races or same culture only. This is the time for counselors to help 1 Malaysia concept achieves its objective. For instance, counselors can accept the clients from diverse cultural backgrounds in order to build good rapport with them and try as much as they can to listen to the gist of client’s problem. Therefore, clients will feel comfortable and think that they still have someone can listen and share the problem even though they are from different cultural backgrounds or races.
It is argued that counselors are the key to the success of 1Malaysia concept because they can be as liaisons between school communities and outside societies. To illustrate, counselors can be the bridge to connect good relationship between multicultural school communities and outside multicultural societies such as parents in order to adapt them with the concept of 1 Malaysia as such concept can help to harmonize the different cultural societies as well as to guarantee the peaceful among them.
As a conclusion, it can be denied that counselors can be as important part or key to make sure the success of 1Malaysia concept despite they cannot help hundred percents the successful of such concept. Everyone has own opinion or perception to say whether counselors are the key to the successful of 1 Malaysia concept or not. The most important thing is how people play their role and responsible to help 1 Malaysia concept achieves its objective and can be success in harmonizing multicultural societies among Malays, Chinese, Indians and other races.

“Counsellors are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concepts”

Noor Aspariza Awang
(0819996)

1 Malaysia concept proposed by our prime minister, aimed at preserving and enhancing unity in diversity of the Malaysian people towards a common future and better tomorrow based on 3 core principles; Mutual acceptance amongst the races and people in Malaysia, Nationalism based on principles of the Federal constitution and Rukunegara, and Social justice. This actually the strategy which tries to deals with the racial issues in Malaysia. As we already know, Malaysia is a multiracial country and through this campaign all Malaysian should unites and fulfill the ultimate inspiration of 1 Malaysia. Is this concept can be achieved is a big question because it deal and preparing the nation toward positive perception and unity among races. Realizing or not, counsellor can contributed something in preparing nation toward that unification. Here, I’m see the counsellor roles as a one of the key to open the door of success of 1 Malaysia concept.

As we already know, counsellor plays the role as a liaison between students, teachers and society. Because of that, counsellor can encourage teachers and school administration to involve students to joins their friends of different races when it comes to making a project not just in program handled by counsellor, but also in normal classes. It should be a mixture of three races at least in making a group project/presentation. For example, there should be Chinese, Malay and Indian must be mixed together in a group when it comes to making a successful project. In fact, more recognition should be given to those who can work together in at least 3 different multi-race students like issuing of certificates, bonus marks on students testimonials and even making good publicity for these students involved during school assembly.

Besides that, Counsellor is a professional profession. Counsellor are always not lacking in terms of the ideas toward something positive especially preparing nation building. They can contribute and proposed their ideas to the Ministry of Education in making the races unite and it something to do with the school curriculum. For example, it need for teacher spending their time at least 15 minutes before finishing their teaching talking about unity among races in multicultural country like Malaysia. It seems effective since from that, we can actually instil and involve students in the discussion in the class about ways to strengthen integrity among youngsters nowadays as to prevent conflict among students of different ethnics from. Hence, together with their teachers in the class to promote a non-ethnic based society. This method undeniably does provide peace and harmony among the modern society if it has been implemented.

In realizing the objectives of 1 Malaysia concept, something must we do with people “stigma”. It is because, not all are agreeing, accepting and understanding this concept thoroughly. The concept proposed that we must respect each other, go beyond tolerance and build trust among each other and build trust between various ethnic groups. So Counsellor as a change agent can provide their services in dealing with the changing people stigma and those who has the problem with racial issues and worse those who are “reluctant” to move. Surely, counsellors are able to break it the people “stigma” and change person behaviour toward positive. In fact, counselling session would lead and promoting not only intellectual development but also personal and social development such as can cooperate and accepting each other from difference races. By so doing all the perceived obstacles toward unity among races would disappear.

Some may said that, preparing unity among races is not under counsellor profession because counsellor is only deal with the problematic client only and nothing to do with the issues arise round them especially racial issues. But, this claimed are not true since counsellor is deal and preparing person to be a good nation to the development of country. In fact, developing public awareness regarding the cultural issues and unity is part of the counsellor role because image of the counsellor profession itself is to change people behaviour and most important is their perceptions toward positive ways.

In conclusion, our beloved Prime Minister has sparked revolutionary ideas by introducing 1 Malaysia as the basis of excellence and toward unification and eliminates the gap among races for the future successful nation, it most valuable if Malaysian can stand under one roof , continuously works and realise this great mission. Towards mental health, interpersonal relations, social adjustment, career planning, and work adjustment in realizing this mission the professional commitment of the counselor is vital at promoting the fullest development of each individual toward integration. No more racial disputes means peace and harmony is in our hand. Actually, this 1 Malaysia concept is good since it will prepare a nation that is progressive, excellence, glorious and distinguished as approach in 1 Malaysia.

COUNSELORS ARE THE KEY TO THE SUCCESS OF ONE MALAYSIA CONCEPT. DISCUSS.

1 Malaysia concept was originated by our Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Najib Abdul Razak as a new idea to enhance integrity among Malaysian. This new manifestation is based on the saying “1 Malaysia – Rakyat Didahulukan, Prestasi Diutamakan.” It brings the meaning that all Malaysian are all together to stand, to think and to react as One People. In other words, 1 Malaysia concept is promoting integrity among multiracial in Malaysia. However, some people had appointed their argument regarding this issue. They believe that this idea create problem of racist and lock the specialties of Bumiputera in Malaysia. This is not the problem actually. This idea of Prime Minister should be given positive acceptance as if it can create a new encouraging environment in our society, such as the unity and integrity among all citizen, regardless of their race and also makes no differences whether they are Chinese, Indian or any minority group in this country.

As a counselor, one should take part in promoting this new concept as yet it does not required encouraging attention from all parties. The role of counselor in giving information is really useful here in introducing the 1 Malaysia concept. This is where it can develop and get attention from people. A counselor should provide a very proper and exact information about the main core of 1 Malaysia concept, so that citizen would not confuse or make wrong interpretation regarding this issue. As I mentioned earlier, many people get mad because of their wrong perception about 1 Malaysia concept whereby they believe that 1 Malaysia will destroy their specialties as a Bumiputera or majority group in this country. so, as a counselor, one should come forward and provide better understanding and misinterpretation about 1 Malaysia concept will not occur anymore.

It should be reminded that school is an agent for providing education and information. Anything about empowering knowledge and information, and developing self will be based at school. A school counselor plays a vital role as well as teachers and people cannot against or argue about this role of an educators. So, it is definitely true that counselors are the key in promoting and instilling 1 Malaysia concept. It is better to support what the best for our future is. And hopefully, with the enough information about 1 Malaysia concept provided by educators and counselors, there would not be any misunderstanding or misinterpretation about it again.

POSITION PAPER 5.
“Counselors are the key to the success of 1 Malaysia concept.”
Due to the above topic, let get through a little bit about 1 Malaysia concept. 1 Malaysia concept was proposed by the Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak. The basic principle of this 1 Malaysia concept is “Rakyat didahulukan,Pencapaian diutamakan” can be said as “mesra rakyat” theme. Well, some people may claim that, those who in authority or power can make this concept become reality in other words the government per se. it is because, the government has power to impose budget and come out with certain portfolio or certain agendas that can make the 1 Malaysia concept really happens and the citizens only follow the flow or take part in the program that being focused or planned. In fact, some people also might think that this 1 Malaysia concept has nothing to themselves or even towards their life and do not realize the good impact of this concept towards the unity, peace and harmony in this country. Perhaps for some people they may claim that this 1 Malaysia concept as a polemic in politics propose by the government.
However for me, I got different point of view regarding 1Malaysia concept. For me personally, this concept is not only on the shoulder of the government but it is the responsibility to all citizen including counselors. For me, counselors can take an important role to the success of this 1 Malaysia concept. It is because, counselors plays a vital role in school as the person that really understand the human psychology or counselors are the expert in school. They can use their expertise to come out with a way and solutiuon to make the theme of 1 Malaysia become raelity. Counselors can play their roles as mediator, consultant and as liason to fulfill their job specificallyly and also as a team of 1 Malaysia concept generally.
In fact, the counselors are among the person who have authority to maintain the unity among the multi cultural society because they know best about human psychology and they are the people who are really expert on multi cultural issues. Hence, the counselor needs to take into consideration the needs of the students and school community when handling or come out with the program. The program should fit to the needs of the students as well as the school community.
Besides, counselors have been trained to face with multi-cultural issues that become a root for the 1 Malaysia concept, which is continuing maintaining the unity among the races in Malaysia. In facts, the counselors are abide by the code of ethics and cunducts that reinforced them to maintain good ethical values in dealing with the clients, eventhough multi cultural or multi diversity of the clients. So, the counselors automatically holding the key of the 1 Malaysia concept.
In a conclusion, I would like to stress out that, the concept of 1 Malaysia is very related to the counselors profession due to the above points I have mentioned which are the expertise of the counselors, the programme being handle by the counselors, and the jobs scope of the counselor that dealing with multi cultural society in Malaysia generally.

Counselors as the key to the success of 1 Malaysia concept.

1 Malaysia Concept was introduced by our new fifth Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak on 3rd April 2009 with the slogan “Rakyat didahulukan, pencapaian diutamakan”. The objective of this concept is to unity of all races regardless whether they are Malay, Chinese, Indian, Dayak, Iban, Kadazan and so on.
Although some people may be disagree with that statement but I am strongly agree that Counselors as the key to the success of 1 Malaysia concept. As we know, the role of counselor in school is very important. In my point of view, firstly, what is the thing that counselors can do is to treat clients same regardless of their races whether in individual counseling session or group counseling session. What I mean here is counselor should not be bias when they are doing these sessions. Because of that, all these clients will feel comfortable with the counselor whether they are from different races.
Another thing that counselor can do is to implement programs, seminars or activities that involve students from all races. It is mean that, all these program, seminar or activities should be represent by all these races without racial bias. Besides, counselor has to plan module that is suitable with all races at that school and concern about it for example from the aspect religion, what is permissible or prohibited in their religion. All these are really important because it give rise to unsatisfied feeling among students because their belief was being humiliated. So the result is they will not more involve in the program, seminar and activities that will be organized in school because there are bias. Actually, counselor can make collaboration with the parties like Ministry of Artistry, Cultural and Heritage in order to make program in school that related to culture. From these, there are a lot of advantages that students can get such as they can know better about other culture. It can instill the self-respect to other culture.
In addition, besides being counselor in school, a counselor also as a consultant to the parents, principal, teachers, school staff and society. Counselor should have good relationship with all these parties. As a consultant, counselor should have enough knowledge, skills and so on. Moreover, they should not be bias whether all these parties are different from the counselor races. If the counselor is not so expert in one field so those counselors have to consult with professional in that field. Not only inside of school, counselor also should have the good relationship with the society outside regardless of their races.
In contrast, some people argue that counselor cannot do anything to achieve this 1 Malaysia concept because it is not really easy to achieve unity. We can see what happened to our country on 13 May 1969 about racial fighting. But it is not demoralize us to integrate all races. Besides, they should realize that role of counselor in school is really important because without counselor in school, the situation in school will be chaos. Furthermore, school is the secondary sources after family. Beside that, as we know, students spare most of the times in school so that the influences is very strong.
In conclusion, although each of Prime Ministers has their own concept but actually the aim is same to society and country for unity. This concept will not be achieved at all if all parties do not cooperate, tolerance, fairness, respect among each other and just regard is as slogan by our new Prime Ministers, when one takes power, one must introduce something to become popular.

Counselors are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concept.

As we all know the objective of 1 Malaysia concept is to unite all of the races in Malaysia and to avoid misunderstanding among the people. Everybody have their right and dignity that need to be respected. When someone said that counselor are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concept, I am fully hearted agreed with them. It is because, counselors can be as a medium to unite all the races such as, Malays, Indian, Chinese and the minority races that live in Malaysia. In this perspective, counselors should move forward and take a steps to contribute something in order to make the objective of the concept that been presented by our Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak successful.

In school, counselor had the authority to consult and give counseling session to the problematic students. This is the time that we need to make the students realize that unity is important among the multiracial people. For example, if the students are being sent to the counseling session because of they involve in bullying or fighting with other different races, counselor should make them change their negative perception and make them know that they are in the same boat. If they make friends with all the races, they can avoid misunderstanding in certain issues. If they unite, more benefit that the school can get and it will also increase its performance in terms of education and sports.

Besides that, counselor tell them that the advantage of mixing with different races like they will learn Mathematics with Chinese students, English with Indians students and Bahasa Melayu with Malays students. Does it worth to get mixing?

Further more, counselors are one of the academician. Their word can be trusted by anybody. With this trust, they will implement a talk to attract people to see that 1 Malaysian is the concept to achieve the successful of our nation. Of course we don’t want the 13 May to happen again. Another example is if the counselors are giving the opportunity to get involve in the politics, I believe that the fighting cases among the politician will decrease by time to time. Nowadays we can see that many of our leader (politicians) always try to get attention by making a statements that can caused the misunderstanding among them. This is not a good example to show to other people especially students. In the television we can see that the different politics parties try to insult others. If the counselor get involve, I believe that they can become the advisor to control this problem.

Another example is the vision school. The implementation of vision school before this is to make the 3 races unite, but it seems doesn’t work because the number of students that register in that school are decrease by years. In this case if the counselor can persuade and make the parents believe that the vision school is the first steps to make our country peaceful, then it will make the counselor’s job more meaningful and it will make the counseling profession more growth and develop. We must remember that, to make 1 Malaysian concept achieve the target, it should started from the school.

On the other hand, some people might say that counselor are only responsible and can contribute something to the school field only. There are not exposed on other fields like politics and economic. It is not true, besides working at the school, they also can work in the government and private sectors, mental health, university, many more. It shows that the impact of the counselor is everywhere. The main aspect that make the counselor are success is when they can make other people listen to their words and make them gain the insight to think and wider their thinking scope.
With all the point, it is firmly stated that counselors are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concept.

COUNSELORS ARE THE KEY TO THE SUCCESS OF THE 1 MALAYSIA CONCEPTS

by: Norfakhrini binti Abdul Razab

0728856

The 1Malaysia concept, introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, was based on the principle of "People First, Performance Now". The government would be prudent in stepping up efforts to balance economic development with social needs to bring about peace and prosperity to the people and that no race or group, including women, the youth, the elderly and the handicapped, was neglected. All parties must take action and responsible to help 1Malaysia concept be successful particularly counselors.

Counselors are born to unite our nation. Counselor must seek out educational, consultative and training experiences to improve the understanding and effectiveness in working with culturally different populations. The major challenge of counseling is to understand the complex role that cultural diversity plays in their work. Cultural sensitivity is not limited to one group but applies to all cultures including Chinese, Indians, Kadazans, Ibans and etc. Counselor can no longer afford to ignore the issues involved in counseling culturally diverse populations. The ACA’s nondiscrimation standard that, counselors do not condone or engage in discriminations based on age, color, culture, disability, ethnic, group, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, mental status and economic status. Therefore, all these showed that counselors have been trained to adapt with other cultural value and not miss up their own value. When counselors are aware of their own values, attitudes, beliefs and behaviors, counselors know how these apply in a diverse society and avoid imposing their values on client. For example, we as Malay counselors have been trained and maintain awareness and sensitivity regarding cultural meanings of confidentiality and privacy towards other culture like China, Indians, Melanau and etc, therefore trustworthy and respect each other exist between students and counselor. Students will realize that other people who are different cultures with them also understand them in terms of sensitivity and values of their culture. Malay know Indians do not eat meat and respect them by do not condemn them with that, and then Chinese respect Malay who do not eat pork and etc.

Counselors just not do the counseling session with the client but counselors also responsible to organize the programs like motivation programs for examination, worldly or even for here after (akhirat) and the important thing now is to unite the nations in our country, 1 Malaysia. 1 Malaysia cannot success without guidance and cooperation from professional like counselors. It is because; counselors are the closes guidance with students at school. They know how to implement “the idea” into the students root mind. By doing it from the root, the possibility to achieve success on 1 Malaysia concept will occur. As we know, everything is beginning at school in shaping the good nation in Malaysia. Malay people claim “ Melentur buluh bermula dari rebungnya”, means that we should do everything by giving the pictures and implement it start from the root. Counselor is responsible to make it at the school for the students in diversity of cultures to make them understand; know the value of each other. Besides that, counselor also can make a program like “Culture Day”, “Traditional Foods and Costumes”, make a visit to difference races school like students from Chinese National Type School go visit the Indians National Types School and have a great celebration in order to introduce both of the culture values and sensitivity to each other. without a counselor, the program like these maybe not run well because counselor has skills and have been trained to make the proposal of the counseling comprehensive program in guidance and counseling program planning and evaluation.

In conclusion, counselors are the key to the success of the 1Malaysia concepts. The younger generation must equip itself with knowledge and skills to inherit the invaluable asset of a nation of pride and respect that had been shaped by the government. Therefore counselor is a key or the only one can guide the younger generations to implement all of this concepts. As a counselor, I hoped Malaysians would continue to maintain unity and share their blessings and responsibilities as this was something unique and a source of strength.
