“Since most of the assessment instruments in the market were based on American culture, Muslim counselors should not use standardized assessment instruments at all”
First of all thank to God for me to write the position paper 4 for this time. For this topic it is quite interesting to discuss. About this topic which is since most of the assessment instruments in the market were based on American, for me I am not denied that, some of the instrument in the market that we use are based on America but not at all. So for this, I am disagreed with that statement that most of the assessment instruments in the market were based on American. I said like this because, if we see, the American culture and our culture which is Malaysian culture are totally different. From this, of course many things are different from them and for example in this context which is assessment instrument. For instance, in American culture, they are freedom to do anything because their culture do not limit them to do so compared to us, as Muslims, we cannot have a same lifestyle with them because we must obey our God’s Rules and anything we do must according to syariah. Furthermore, we live in eastern country; of course we must practice our culture which is fully of tradition and eastern culture.

The examples of assessment instrument that usually we use are personality test, ability test, cognitive test and others. So for that statement which is Muslim counselors should not use standardized assessment instruments at all are true for me and I agree with that. This is because we have a different culture from them as I have told just now. Here for example, we take the personality test which is based on American as an assessment instrument to the Malaysian people. We not denied that some of it can be used but almost of them are quite different and not suitable question to ask for the people in Malaysia because the lifestyle is different from them, and of course the personality also different because it maybe influence by their lifestyle.
Besides that, the Muslims must have our own assessment instrument because we also have our own values to evaluate and at the same time we will know what personality are we, what the level of ability and so on. Until today, what I know in Malaysia, we have one Professor who has create his own assessment instrument that has been use by people in our country. I think it is good improvement to have our own assessment instrument and after this we do not depend the assessment instrument from western anymore.
As conclusion, I still agree with my stand that Muslim counselors should not use standardized assessment instruments at all and not most of assessment instrument based on American. I hope that, many Muslim’s people realize and try to come out with our own assessment instrument which is relating and reliable to use for us in this country especially for the Muslims.
