POSITION PAPER NO.5 by Nor Fazela bt. Che Hasim (0724448)

“Counselors are the key to the success of the 1Malaysia concept”

1 Malaysia? New manner, new concept and new approach. As we know the aim of 1 Malaysia is to promote integration and unity of various communities in the country. The question then to be posed to Malaysian of all races, is 1 Malaysia is right approach to achieving national integration? Whatever the answers come from the people outside, I can say that it is one of the manners to integrate and unite all of races in Malaysia beside the other ways. Apart from that, as a counselor, we should take an opportunity to promote integration among difference races in school through the 1 Malaysia concepts. Hence, counselors are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concepts because counselor can draw up many comprehensive programs in school and can be bench marking for the students in order to unite school community.

First and foremost, counselors are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concepts because counselor can draw up many comprehensive programs in school. The "One Malaysia" concept can unite the people of various communities in the country in a more just manner. The concept would be implemented in an organized and systematic manner to ensure that no community was isolated from development of any kind. That is why when we are running the program we should implement all activities acceptable by all parties in the most extensive manner possible that can promote integration among the nation comprehensively including school community, parents and society. For instance, we can support the programs that running by government such as Rancangan Integrasi Murid Untuk Perpaduan (RIMUP), Program Latihan Khidmat Negara (PLKN), and Festival Celebration that can be organize at school to mix up with each other and give them information the concept is all about.

Secondly, counselors are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concepts because counselor can be bench marking for the students in order to unite school community. Two main principles of 1 Malaysia, which were mutual respect for one another and trust in one another. Our Prime Minister said, "When we have respect for one another, it means we have the open attitude of appreciating the concept of unity in diversity. The trust for one another will not come about all of a sudden. It has to be developed in an organized and determined way”. So, counselor can be bench marking for students to show and practice the good behavior such as respect and trust among teachers and school staff. Counselor can be a role model for students during conduct a counseling session or programs if clients from different races. Besides that, respect and trust others even though they are from minority ethnic because they are also same like us as a Human kind.

On the other hand, some people may claim that the implementation of 1 Malaysia concept is just for political purposes or interest. They said that government tries to provoke people with new concept but after government change their Prime Minister the other new concept will come up without care or continue the old one. For example Vision School that were introduced by Tun Dr. Mahathir to promote racial integration a few years ago but after 7 years being implemented we don’t see any good result. However, the all thing will not happen if Chinese community cooperate and support the Vision School concept. It is because only the Chinese community refused to join Vision School plan as they claimed that such a venture will result in Chinese students losing their culture and identity. We don’t want to blame other races but try to find the best way to integrate and unite the races in Malaysia. So, start from now we should not look at back and try to looking forward to achieve our goals and destiny as 1 Malaysia.

In conclusion, counselors are the key to the success of the 1 Malaysia concepts because counselor can draw up many comprehensive programs in school and can be bench marking for the students in order to unite school community. In addition, the government should continue to engage the parties opposed to concepts such as the 1 Malaysia and convince these parties that such people are not only in the interest of “Malay”, “Chinese” or “Indians”, but as Malaysians. In the long term, and in the interest of the country, it is really need to move beyond the concepts of “Malay”, “Chinese” or “Indian” and set up the single stream concept of “1 Malaysian” which will at the same time protect and celebrate the cultural diversity of Malaysians ethnic groups.
