POSITION PAPER NO.3

(ILI KAIYISAH MUHD KAMAL-0720266)

“Violence in the school is a result of differences outside school. We as counselors can’t do anything about it.” Discuss.

According to Wikipedia, Violence can be refers as the expression of physical or verbal force against self or other, compelling action against one's will on pain of being hurt. Variant uses of the term refer to the destruction of non-living objects. For Worldwide definition, violence is used as a tool of manipulation and also is an area of concern for law and culture which take attempts to suppress and stop it. The word violence covers a broad spectrum. It can vary from between a physical altercation between two beings where a slight injury may be the outcome to war and genocide where millions may die as a result. Hence, violence among teenagers in school are famous issues and hard to handle because of certain major conflict between the schools and parents. In my opinion, I strongly disagree with the topic above because we as the counselor have the opportunities to solve the problem if the school and parents give cooperation and take serious in preventing this issue.

In addition, there are lots of cases happened among the students and other races which gave bad reputation toward the school. In Malaysia, there are lacks of opportunities given to the counselors to solve the problems. Violence in school increase every years and the society would likely to blame each other without thinking of the reason why it is happened. If the authorities give attention to the counselor profession and willing to cooperate, violence issues at school may be decrease. For example, the counselor can make a lots of session with the students and being able to discover the student problems by introduce the qualities and benefits they get when they involve in counseling session. Counseling is not for problematic student but for everyone. We should clear up the bad perception about counselors in school. By doing this, the counselor can attract the student attention.

Moreover, Carl Roger (1951) also stated that every individual has their own uniqueness. When a student involved in fight or bullying other students, the most important thing to do is not accused the student by doing it but asking why, searching for answers and more curious about the student background. By doing this not only we know our students but they also feel that we care about them. We should seek uniqueness in them not condemning them directly. Beside, different Socioeconomic Status is the major influences violence in school. There are too many gaps between the low socioeconomic statuses and the high socioeconomic statuses.
Additionally, several thousand articles and books have been written about the cause and prevention of violence. For practical purposes and not theory, there are thirteen general reasons why people become violent. Recognizing these reasons can help you understand and deal with the risk of violence for instance, to Punish others which is the purpose of violent behavior is to obtain justice or revenge, or is the result of a victim’s rage. For Freedom will used violence as the result of a threat to or loss of freedom. For control that violent acts are the result of a fear of losing control or anger over losing control and so on.

On the other hand, some people claimed that counselors does not do the job well and don’t have many responsible at schools rather than other teachers. However, most of the counselors complain that the school does not give them lots of works against the counselor profession. Because of this matter, it is hard for the counselor to approach their own students and identified the violence problems that occurred in the school.

In conclusion, there are strategies to prevent violence in school occurred. Counselors should make strategies to prevent the violence occurred in school for example, motivation, counseling group, workshop about how to handle aggression, stress, depression and so on. Hence, the counselors play an important role in preventing violence in school.
