Since most of the assessment instruments in the market were based on American culture, Muslim counselors should not use standardized assessment instruments at all. Discuss.

Nowadays, a lot of the instruments are using American standards of assessment either in the education field or in industrial field. This is happen because most of the assessment instruments are made by the American people. So, it using the standards of American culture. But, many of other country still using their assessment including Malaysia. But, does it can be applied in our culture actually? Based on the research and the examples that taken from the instruments from America, it is clearly shows that it contradict with Malaysian culture also with Islam. So, I strongly disagree with the use of assessment from America in counseling field.


As a counselor also, we should be aware of the multi cultural races in our country. It might be hurting some people if their culture is not been given attention by the counselors. Assessment instruments is defined as an inventories that will test personal traits, personality traits and ability test to people in order to examine them. For instance, the assessment are personality test, ability test, IQ test, emotional test, career test and so on. This test is applied to the people in order to know more about the client so that the counselor will build a good rapport with the client. It also will help the counselor to understand the client. But, in my point of view, counselors should not use the standardized assessment instruments at all.


Perhaps, the counseling association in Malaysia should implement our own assessment instruments so that it will be use as standardized assessment instruments in our country. The instruments should be made by taking into consideration the culturally differences in Malaysia also the religion itself. If a good test is implemented, so there would be a better result in future and also will help the counselors to improvise their services.


As our prime minister is suggested to Malaysian to consume Malaysia goods, so same goes with the assessment instruments. Why don’t we implemented our assessment and make it as Malaysian standardized assessment instruments ? In my opinion, it would be better and perhaps some other country will use it too if it can suit with their country.
