“Since most of the assessment instruments in the market were made based on American culture, Muslim counselors should not use standardized assessment instrument at all.”

Assessment instruments are tools for test like questionnaire that contain information
about client. The result is use for counselor to identify client based on standardized assessment.
This may be beneficial to all population, but it become a challenges to the test user because the
diversity of clients background. There specifically related to the multicultural population.

I disagree that Muslim counselor should not use standardized assessment at all. Actually,
there have so many assessments that can be use even to the Muslim clients. For example, career test by Holland which helps exploring various career option and narrow down choices. The question are based on the interest, where analysis and matching career choices with clients
interest and lifestyle. If they use an assessment that are not suitable with clients because of the different race, ethnicity, culture, language, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion and ability the counselor may change it and use certain data only. It is true that it may be sensitive to Muslim clients but counselor can still use it to others clients. For instant in theory personality by Freud, they had touch about sexual theory. In Islamic view, counselor can use other method that related to this theory. In addition, Quran and sunnah can also be apply because in Quran also mention about personality.

Assessments help a lot in the process of analysis client’s problems, without assessment it
become difficult. That is why I disagree that counselor should not totally use standardized
assessment instrument at all. The importance thing is counselor have to be creative and flexible; where they know when to use it, when is not and try to find another resources to help clients
depend on situation. In counseling there have so many theories and approach, it depend on
counselor to choose it suited with clients needs.
