“Counselors are the key to the success of the one Malaysia concept”

For being a good counselor, surely we must have training before being qualified as a counselor. Counselor is the one who understand very well the environment and condition around him so that he can find the solution in order to overcome it. How the counselor would be able to solve the problem without knowing and well insight about multicultural counseling. When there are three cultures have living in the same area or place, there must have problems occurs because these cultures have different understanding and belief. Besides, each culture doesn’t feel that they are attaching as Malaysian, but feel that they are belong to their tribe.


Counselor should be very know and fluent about counseling skills. Contained in this subject, there are many skills that can be used to the students which can develop their feel of unity and belonging such as unconditional positive regard, empathy, genuineness, non judgmental, and acceptance. All these elements are very contented to be applied towards people. By putting all positive thinking towards the client, we can avoid judgmental towards another person simply like that. Usually, all these elements should be developing when we build rapport with the client.
As the agent between the school and community, counselors can use their skills to get clear picture of their client perspective and find the best solution to fix with the Counseling skills is most approachable towards people. People usually have the perception that the function of the counselor is to help problematic student only, but not as the person that can change their perception and situation. As a bridge between school administrator, parents and community, they can listen to the parents’ side, administrator and find the best way to solve it by using elements in counseling.


In order to understand and get the clear picture about one’s culture, the counselors are encourage to do more outreach to the area which he never belong to. It’s important so that the counselor can get clear picture about the real life of the society which he never dream of so that he become more understanding towards that particular culture. The more outreach that he do, the more feedback he get. Besides get better understanding about their way of life and thinking, counselor also can build good relationship with the people. Counselor as an agent play good model to promote school spirit outside the school and bring it out the school.


In my opinion, counselor is the person who is most capable to change the setting of people’s mind because counselor learn scientific study of human development and they understand very well of human’s behavior and cognitive. By studying this particular subject, they become aware of human changes and be able to solve the problem at very root problem.
