CROSS-CULTURAL COUNSELING (EDG 4008)
SUZIELAWATI BT OMAR @ ABDUL AZIZ (0816548)
“Counselors are the key to the success of the 1Malaysia concept”. Discuss.
The 1Malaysia concept that have already launched by our current Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak, which the vital aim of the concept is to facilitate the aspiration to forge unity among Malaysians of diverse ethnic origin, culture and religion. Since Malaysian consists of three major races, which is Malay, Chinese and Indian, so that the element needed to be created to enhance unity, as well as to ensure the concept of 1Malaysia is successful, was the respect and trust among the groups of different ethnic origin.
Then, according to the last topic of position paper above, I strongly disagree to say that counselors are the key to the success of the 1Malaysia concept. This is because I believed that there are another parties, especially parents and society itself to become the key for the success of the 1Malaysia concept. What can I say here is everyone believed that parents become the primary source of educating children at home since they in early age. So that, parents should instill their children with the spirit of unity, no discrimination and no doubt between all races in Malaysia, as well as they can mix and befriend with all community, without any discrimination from which races they are. On the other hand, the government also becomes one of the key to ensure the concept of 1Malaysia to be success. This is because the government becomes a back bone for a country in order to ensure the sense of unity, toleration, and harmony among the citizens which come from diverse races. Besides that, in order to make 1Malaysia to become reality, government should ensure that all races are given fair consideration and rights of theirs and not only one particular race to feel as though the government is isolating or sidelining them.
Furthermore, some people may assume that counselors also as a key to the success of the 1Malaysia concept. It is can’t be denied because counselor also may instill the spirit of unity among the students in school but how far it could be? Perhaps, a counselor can arrange a program which involves all the students from various races, but before that, counselor have to investigate first what does and does not in every race in order to avoid misunderstanding between all races. A counselor also has to alert about the sensitive issues that exist in every race during the program, otherwise it can lead to chaos among the community.
In the nut shell, my final assumption of the topic is I strongly disagree that counselors are the key to the success of 1Malaysia concept. Instead, all the parties such as parents, government and the societies itself are the key to ensure the success of 1Malaysia concept. In addition, all the races have to be aware that we have to respect each other, because it is the main key of unity among all. As what we can see now, Malaysia has already proved that different races can live together in harmony. Now, let Malaysia prove that the success of one race does not mean the defeat of the others, but is in fact the best way to achieve success for the whole country, InsyaAllah.
