POSITION PAPER 3 by Nurul Farhana Sulong (0724700)

“Violence in the school is a result of differences outside school. We as counselors can’t do anything about it.” Discuss.

Recently, violence in schools becomes more critical and worst since it is major issues in society. Most of school violence happens due to use of guns and weapons illegally in school areas. However, these situations usually occur in western country which has more freedom in the society life. What is means by violence actually in school context? According to Wikipedia, violence in schools may refer to the violence happens between school students as well as physical attacks by students on school staff. Generally, violence can be defined as the expression of physical or verbal force against self or other, compelling action against one's will on pain of being hurt. It indicates that violence may happen to anybody within themselves or toward the others. There are lots of factors contribute to the violence in schools such as influence by media electronic like television and internet, friends involvement as well as lack of attention and love from family. Nowadays, television and theater productions have changed so dramatically that viewers are exposed to extreme amounts of media violence. This makes the violence among teenagers increase since they are easily influenced by the attractive elements regardless of the types of violence they committed either it is physical violence, sexual violence or psychological violence.

Violence in the school is a result of differences outside school. I totally agree with this statement since most of the factors that I have mentioned above are relates to the surroundings of the students’ life regardless of their cultural background. As a counselor, we can’t do anything about it but we can provide programs to the students in order to reduce the violence in schools. In addition, the differences of the students outside school such as cultural background, socio-economic status, religious and educational background have its own effects on school environments. Since this is a community issue and we live in a community, as counselors, we need to find ways, partner and start to deal with the systemic issues that involve the students in school violence. In school, we still can manage and control it as we provide the rules and regulations and it is one kind of organization in educating the children. However, when it comes to the outside of school, it is quite hard for us as counselors to eradicate it alone. We need all the support from all party to ensure violence in school can be reduced.

Some suggestions for reducing youth violence, both in and out of school, include committed in raising children safely and effectively. As counselors, we may provide programs that serve parents, children, and child care providers need to be designed to promote positive discipline, effective communication, and investment of quality time between parents and their children. Besides, we can make prevention and intervention a reality which is implementing programs that relates to family and school audiences in order to cope with the youth violence. In addition, we may support our schools by providing extension programs like educating the school audiences include teachers, students, parents, and administrators with the life skills that is needed to the youth success. Lastly, socialization and collaborations among families, schools, and other institutions in the community are needed in order to develop communication among youth in positive ways. We need to help children "end the conspiracy of silence" by developing relationships with students that creates an environment for them to feel compelled to tell an adult when they hear anything suspicious. Thus, in Maslow's hierarchy: the needs of safety and security must be taken care of before children can concentrate on learning. If the children lose their safety and security, they will not develop well and hard to focus on their life.

As conclusions, I can say that cooperation of all party includes parents, teachers, administrators, and students will ensure the successfulness of reducing the violence in school. Establishing mentoring relationships among teachers and encouraging collaboration through dialogue over these issues is one way of spreading knowledge and experience around. Violence in schools is only a symptom of a much larger problem facing society. There are no easy answers. But at the minimum, we have to find ways to bring more adults with whom children can identify into direct contact with them on a regular basis. This may not sound like much, especially when compared to the high-tech solutions promoted in most quarters. But in the long run, it may have the greatest impact. We as counselors should try all of approach in order to decrease all the negative elements in students’ life.
