Position Paper 3

“Violence in the school is a result of differences outside school. We as counselors can’t do anything about it.” Discuss.

What is violence? According the wikipedia the free encyclopedia, violence is the expression of physical or verbal force against self or other, compelling action against one's will on pain of being hurt. At the microlevel, personal violence acts of aggression or force performed by individuals may be directed at inanimate objects, animals, one's self, or other bodies. Although some forms of interpersonal violence, such as injuries on the sports field or shootings in self-defence, are culturally sanctioned. At the macrolevel, advances in military and media technology have made violence (and the threat of it) global. Not only can we annihilate the entire planet through nuclear weapons, but we can transmit, via satellite, war and other public spectacles of violence into homes all over the globe.

In school, usually violence will happen among difference races or ethnic. This is because it have different cultural and custom among the race or ethnic and sometimes they (refer to student) do not want to tolerate and understanding each other. However, not all students are like this. Most of the student who are involve in the violence are typically will said that they are stick on their own cultural and who ever said something bad about their cultural, they should be “teach” by using the violence as a way to defense their cultural.

When the violence happens in school, the students who are involves will be referred to the counselor. As the counselor, what we can do is we have to unite them like what our Prime Minister always mentions that we are Malaysian, as 1 Malaysian. One of the ways to unite them is showing them about the history how difficult the old timer to get our independent and show them the meaning of unite ness.

However, we as counselor just can monitor them in the school area only because the violence have influence from outside the school area. Here, we need cooperation from the society to prevent the violence. Unfortunately, some society does not want to give the cooperation with reason that it is not their problem. But, when something bad happen, they (refer to the society) will blame the school-not well-discipline the student so that the violence happen.

As the conclusion, not only the counselor has to think the way out to solve the violence problem, counselor needs the cooperation from the society also because society gives influence to student. Insyaallah with the cooperation, violence can be reducing in school.
