POSITION PAPER 3: “Violence in the school is a result of differences outside school. We as counselors can’t do anything about it” discuss.
Violence can be referred as a violation of a person’s physical and civic as well as his or her psychological or personal integrity (pride and dignity). Perhaps, if we stick to the definition that there are many forms of violence not only physical per se, but include any acts and words that can cause others feel hurt can be considered as violence. Another matter that should be taken into consideration is how an individual describes violence acts or violence words? It explain that every individual acknowledge different measurement about violence either in act or words. For some people, they may think that violence words are some sort of using all the “makian” or harsh words, but for others, if you words make me feel hurt, I can consider it as violence regardless they used soft voice or soft words. Perhaps, due to the differences in measured or weight the violence, counselors can’t do anything because this is about an individual framework, the way of think and the way of react towards it. Counselor may be being able to change people behaviour but they can’t indoctrinate to their client about what it is exactly violence all about. In fact, their values and up-bringing ways are differing between one another. Hence, individual have their own right to think freely without influenced by others.
All the above statement may be some of opinion from other people, however for me; I have different point of views. It might be true that each person see and measured violence from their own perspectives, but counselor can do something about it. I am saying based on the situation of a school counselor. Counselor in school not only act as a counselor but also as a motivator, as teacher, as advocate, and as guider to the students precisely but also to the school community generally. Due to the counselor profession and their responsibilities at school, many things can be done by them by using their roles. For example, counselor can teach his students about what act or action can be considered as violence. Counselor also can provide insight to the students about respecting others in order to curb violence among students. In fact, counselor also can build up the healthy environment at school whereby everybody realizes their own responsibilities towards others and also towards themselves. By using counselor multirole at school, counselor can creates many program emphasize on awareness towards violence, its implications towards themselves and others. Counselor also can teach them through special guidance using the media instrument at school by providing necessary information about violence. Thus, counselor also can reunite the students and all the school activities with the entire program their conducted like campaign, camping and etc.
On the other side, at school counselor is the most understanding regarding human emotional and psychology rather than others. So, counselor needs to become proactive to fulfill their responsibilities as counselor and hope can provides useful information, techniques and skills in dealing violence at school. Counselor also needs to emphasize on prevention on violence and not only to curb the violence. Different methodology needed to deal with prevention like I have mentioned earlier, and other methodology needed to curb the violence. Of course, the counselor needs to includes and bear in mind about the difference on matter of belief or religion and also culture or custom. Hence, counselor needs to use universal concept and methods so that everybody can take part without feels discriminate with certain aspects or matters. In other words, counselor needs to become more sensitive towards the methods and conducts in their program (it should be neutral and everybody can take place).
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize on Islamic perspective about this issues. Rasulullah have taught us regarding this matter- during the open day of Mekah after hijrah to Madinah. He teaches us on how to be nice even though to Kafirun and not to be violence. Rasullulah also had been given examples through his life for example on adab to the enemies, to the war prisoner, to the neighbours even though they are not Muslim. So, I would like to conclude all by stressing out that I am disagree with the topic because I believe that counselor can do something to reduce violence at school even though there are many outsides factors.
